13 years ago this week, John Younger and I arrived in El Salvador for a historical commemoration of the Day of Disappeared Children, where the government formally apologized for the atrocities it committed during the country’s civil war. We were only just beginning our documentary film and to understand the complex history of my story, the country, and this region of the world.

Welcome back to the Identifying Nelson/Buscando a Roberto newsletter. It has been several years since we last sent out one of these updates. John and I would like to apologize for being out of touch for so long. Despite our absence, we have made tremendous progress behind the scenes, especially in recent months.

There is so much about these developments that we want to share with you. However, instead of trying to cram everything into one super-long email, we are going to break it up into smaller segments. Our goal is to send out an update about once a month that will go into more detail about our progress. While John and I are really excited to share what we have been working on, we are even more excited to share the film when it finally comes out.

When we started working on our documentary, neither of us truly understood how much work goes into a project of this size. As a result, reaching this stage has taken much longer than we imagined.

Despite all the setbacks, John and I never gave up, and in the past few years, all our hard work has really started to pay off. We are close to completing a second rough cut of the film, which we will use to look for a distribution partner.

We’ll share more about the rough cut in our next update, but for now, we’d just like to say thank you for sticking with us all these years. We can’t wait to share more with you in the coming months.
